Stonemasonry Services for Modern & Heritage Projects
The WI&A Gilbert team provides market-leading services in stonemasonry Scotland can be proud of. We work to deliver high quality projects across highway structures, including retaining walls and bridges, as well as on historic buildings for public and private-sector clients. We also repair and restore existing stonework on historic sandstone structures across Scotland, providing exact masonry matches for replacement and using era-appropriate materials and mortars. Previous projects that our stonemasons have worked on include historic sandstone rail bridges, art galleries, churches and office buildings in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Troon, Mauchline and many other places.

Trusted by Councils & Commercial Clients
Whether the project calls for the sensitive precision and artistry required to create stonemasonry for a listed building, or the scope and flexibility to address the needs of large-scale highway construction, we can deliver with aplomb. Members of our team have on projects in UNESCO heritage sites in Edinburgh, historic university buildings in Glasgow and sandstone road bridges in many other challenging contexts. Each time, the results have earned us plaudits and established working relationships that we maintain to this day.
Experienced & Accredited Stonemasonry
Our in-house stonemasons have a combination of time-served on-site experience and recognised industry qualifications, including ProQual Level 3 NVQ Diplomas in Heritage Skills and other accredited achievements. It’s this that helps us deliver public projects and commercial restoration work of the highest quality. Working side by side with our own in-house architectural and design specialist, the results speak for themselves. It’s all part of our commitment to maintaining and preserving Scotland’s historic structures, while also delivering the best for new infrastructure projects.
Sensitive Stonework Repair & Replacement
Our approach to each stonemasonry project is entirely bespoke and sensitive to the materials and techniques needed to deliver the optimal finish. Take our work on Dykefield Bridge in Mauchline. The underlying structure was replaced, but to keep the bridge’s appearance consistent with the older structure, our stonemasons used site-cut and site-dressed red sandstone, much of which had been recovered from the original collapsed bridge. Combined with recycled sandstone brought in from another site, the restoration was faultless. That’s just one example of how we tackle sensitive stonework repairs, and our seasoned specialists can apply their expertise to similar projects where care and attention to detail are paramount.

WI&A Gilbert brings traditional craft and proven expertise to stone masonry projects for local authorities and public sector clients. From the restoration and repair of historic structures to the construction of new stone features within public realm and infrastructure schemes, we deliver work of the highest standard — sympathetic to its surroundings and built to endure.
WI&A Gilbert employ exceptional stonemasons, with our services covering the construction and repair of sandstone masonry on highway structures, public and commercial buildings, and everything in between. We can comfortably work on the repair and restoration of listed structures, using natural stone and heritage mortars, to deliver pristine results that preserve the historic built environment.
We do indeed, and our team’s previous projects include the Barskimming Old Bridge (Grade B Listed) in Mauchline, as well as our ongoing partnership with Balfour Beatty on the maintenance and repair of sandstone structures under the Historical Railways Estate Framework.
Restorative stonemasonry relies on a seamless finish, and our specialist stonemasons can precisely match existing stonework with exact copies where replacement is needed, including matching the base stone material, colour, texture and applied surface dressing.
Our team is just as comfortable, and has extensive experience, building sandstone retaining walls and bridges for modern highway projects as it is with repairing and restoring historic structures.
As mentioned, we work with Balfour Beatty on the ongoing restoration and maintenance of historic rail bridges, where sandstone elements often require repair. The other organisations we’ve partnered with on stonemasonry projects include East Ayrshire Council and many other local authorities across Scotland. Members of our stonemasonry team, whilst working with Hunter & Clark, have previously carried out high quality heritage repairs on the likes of Barony Church/Hall (Strathclyde University) and St Meddan’s Parish Church (Troon).
